Locals invited to put recycling skill to test

PUT your recycling knowledge to the test by participating in a new online quiz and go in the draw to win a gift voucher.

Mayor Khal Asfour says the Recycle Right quiz is aimed at understanding how much local residents know about what they can and can’t recycle and helping them get it right.

There are even some questions that could challenge even experienced recyclers.

“Since its inception in 2012, the Recycle Right program has assisted in educating residents by acknowledging and rewarding them,” he said.

“It’s been so effective, it’s won multiple state and national awards, and been introduced by other councils throughout Australia.

“The program is now set to be expanded.”

While council officers will continue to conduct fortnightly bin inspections and door-knocking across Canterbury-Bankstown, they will also identify bins with high levels of non-recyclable materials.

These bins will not be emptied and will be tagged, notifying residents of what unacceptable items they placed in their bin. Once those items have been removed, residents can call the council to organise collection.

The most common items incorrectly placed in recycling bins include electronic waste; building materials; plastics; foam; food; and soiled nappies.
